TOYDS gives away a pair of crutches

Toyds was registered earlier this year with one thing in mind, increasing the visibility of children with special needs. While I was doing my third year Physiotherapy practicals I met a lovely boy who had all the potential to be great except he was hindered in his inability to be mobile around his home.

The hinderance being that he lacked independence at home due to the lack of a walking aide. In his case, a pair of crutches.

Doing something as small as playing outside with his friends or going to the corner store was an impossible task as he had no way to be mobile unless he was being carried.

With patience, perseverance and determination we sold enough copies of the book '4 Friends' (the character Jimmie is based on this young man) to buy him a pair of crutches which were presented to him in front of his whole class.

Apparently he had been counting down the days till this particular day, which was fantastic because I had been counting down to this day myself.

This is just one example of what we can do as a company, by giving 'Jimmie' a pair of crutches we have given him the ability to be integrated into his community thereby increasing the visibility of children affected by disabilities.

Nothing hurts my heart quite as much as the idea that children affected by disabilities are forced to stay in their homes effectively hidden from society. Some due to the stigma around disabilities in South Africa but some due to lack of access to the basic necessities such as a walking aide.

I encourage you to buy the book 4 Friends and help in ensuring this work can continue and we can keep giving out walking aides to children who need them.
